Tornado sightings in Glynn County

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga.- At least one tornado has been reported as a result of Hurricane Irma and Glynn County is now under a tornado warning. The F. J. Torres Causeway and Sea Island Causeway are now closed due to flooding, as are multiple other roads.

Glynn County officials are urging citizens to shelter-in-place. As weather conditions continue to deteriorate, we reiterate that this is still a very serious situation. Storm conditions are dangerous and it is not safe to travel. We are still experiencing tropical storm force winds and flooding throughout our area. Once again, shelter-in-place, do not leave your homes, and stay off of the roadways.

Downed trees and high winds have caused power outages on St. Simons Island and on the mainland. JWSC is confident that due to a lack of power, water service will be intermittent and sewer will be unavailable. Conserve water at this time. Do not touch fallen power lines as they can be extremely dangerous.

Glynn County and the City of Brunswick are still under a tropical storm and storm surge warning with the addition of a tornado warning and a flash flood watch. The area is expecting to see wind gusts up to 70 mph, storm surge of 4 – 6 feet on the ocean front, and a flooding risk of 2 – 3 feet in low lying neighborhoods. In addition, a possibility of 6 – 12 inches of rain that can produce floods.

A curfew from midnight to 6 a.m. has been extended to Wednesday, September 13. Glynn County officials continue to monitor the storm and advise the public to prepare for dangerous weather conditions. Another update will be released this evening.
