ARTESIA, N.M. – The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) welcomed the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Deputy Under Secretary for Management (DUSM) Randolph D. “Tex” Alles to its Office of Artesia Operations on Nov. 19. FLETC Director Thomas J. Walters and Site Director Terry Todd hosted the DUSM’s tour of both the East and West FLETC-Artesia facilities.
Todd explained to Alles, “FLETC is not located in Artesia, but FLETC is a part of Artesia.” FLETC-Artesia has a valuable relationship with the community.
Alles had the opportunity to observe training while Walters and Todd briefed him on the purpose of the training venues he visited. While on Center, Alles also met with FLETC leadership and Participating Organization leadership to discuss the training venues and training projections at FLETC-Artesia.
At the FLETC-Artesia West Facility, Alles drove a four-wheel drive vehicle to experience the largest off-road law enforcementtrainingenforcement training course in the United States.
Alles complimented FLETC-Artesia by describing the facility as a “sophisticated training complex.”
FLETC-Artesia currently occupies more than 3,600 acres and is FLETC’s largest training site by acreage and second largest by students trained. Student throughput has grown by more than 200% over the past 30 years, with FLETC now collaborating with agencies such as the U.S. Border Patrol, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Secret Service, and Transportation Security Administration’s Federal Air Marshal Service, in providing basic and advanced law enforcement training in Artesia.
