FLETC Holds National Police Week Law Enforcement Community Day

For Immediate Release

GLYNCO, Ga. – The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) hosted a Law Enforcement Community Day, May 15, 2019, for local community law enforcement officers, first responders, judicial staff and their families expressing gratitude for their dedicated service in recognition of National Police Week.

“I think it is very important to celebrate our officers that have died in the line of duty,” said Philip Amoroso, a law enforcement specialist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

In collaboration with partnering federal agencies, FLETC offered hands-on federal law enforcement exhibits and training demonstrations, showcased tactical vehicles and water vessels, organized campus tours, and offered a complimentary lunch for attendees, including FLETC and various federal agency students, staff and family members.

Glynn County Probate Court Judge Debra Godwin Duncan stated she attended the event to see the different activities and programs FLETC offers for students. During the campus tour, Duncan experienced two real-world training venues, an aircraft countermeasures demonstration and the sights of Danis City.

“You would have thought it was a real city—it looked like downtown Brunswick,” said Duncan.

The synergy of FLETC law enforcement training instructors alongside those from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, National Marine Fisheries Service, Transportation and Security Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) provided an occasion for community engagement as well as campus-wide interaction.

Jeffrey Johnston, an instructor with the USMS staged a tactical training display for event attendees and expressed his thoughts on National Police Week Law Enforcement Community Day.

“I think it is a good opportunity for every agency to showcase their equipment, their personnel, and basically expose every member, or every partner organization and community member that came out, on how we work together to accomplish the mission, which is training here at FLETC,” stated Johnston.

The sentiment was echoed by Branch Chief Lauren Ware, FLETC Forensics Special Investigative Skills, during the forensics display intriguing passersby with three-dimensional casts of crime-scene evidence and sharing real-life forensics compared to what is seen on television.

“We were not only able to interact with the community, but with our FLETC family as well,” added Ware. “This is an opportunity to come behind the scenes and through the gates to see what it is that we do here.”
