Looking for a place to begin, continue, and/or grow a career can be daunting, especially when you have limited access to the potential employer. Intimately knowing this, FLETC decided to begin an employee blog that provides potential FLETC job applicants with an inside look at FLETC. The articles you will find in this blog contain candid employee insights that highlight the diversity at FLETC in addition to providing insights on the topics that job seekers most frequently discuss with our FLETC recruiters (i.e., FLETC campuses, career paths, how to become an instructor, etc.). To ensure transparency, and respect the privacy of our FLETC employees, all employees that contribute to the articles choose their own pseudonym (and so far, the employees seem to enjoy this part!).

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, FLETC, is beginning a new endeavor to provide potential applicants a more intimate view of the FLETC workforce: Employee Insights. These Stories will showcase the diversity of the FLETC workforce and will be written anonymously. Anonymity will allow a depth of intimacy while protecting the sensitive nature of the work at FLETC. Thus, all names used in the articles are fictitious to encourage transparent and authentic views of our workforce.

I choose Brianna for my pseudonym, and I am working on this project on behalf of the FLETC Strategic Recruitment, Diversity and Inclusion Council. Being part of the Council, and the incredible work the Council does, is only one of the many reasons I enjoy my career at FLETC.

FLETC is predominantly known for its superior law enforcement training instructors, but I can assure you that the staff responsible for ensuring FLETC meets operational goals is just as phenomenal. If you think about any school or college you attended, there were a lot of people, in addition to teachers, who worked to ensure the school functioned efficiently and effectively: Principals, Assistant Principals, Janitors, School Board Members, Payroll Specialists, IT Support Personnel, Human Capital Specialists, Contractors, and many (many) more. Now apply the same logic to FLETC, and you begin to understand why a diverse workforce is critical to our mission

Being part of the Federal Government and having a career at FLETC opens the door to many more opportunities. I can apply to other Federal Jobs on USAjobs.gov that the public does not have access to. I also can participate in leadership development programs, which I am currently doing. Being part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), FLETC employees have the benefits of a multi-component Department at their fingertips.  The leadership program I am a part of spans all of DHS; thus, I am privileged to work with some of the most brilliant and dedicated public servants across all DHS components.

FLETC’s locations are also beneficial to a diverse workforce. FLETC has campuses in Glynco, GA, Artesia, NM, Charleston, SC, Cheltenham, MD, and the National Capitol Region. In addition, some positions at FLETC allow telework and/or are fully remote, allowing employees to work from home. Therefore, no matter what your preferences are for location, FLETC has a campus for you.

I am eager to write about and share the intimate and diverse lives of our workforce with you through these Stories. Although I am introverted, I will share a few things about myself: I live in the mountains, I love to walk, I value peace and quiet, I respect authenticity and introspection, I enjoy the autonomy of my job, and I hope to, one day, be able to fully sustain myself by growing all my own food, sewing all my clothes, and living really close to a Wal-Mart Supercenter just in case!

I am eager to share Rick’s story with you as his journey addresses two questions FLETC Recruiters frequently receive: How to become an instructor at FLETC and What career paths are available at FLETC?

Rick, who chose his own pseudonym, started his career in the military. As with many of our instructors, this was also the beginning of his career at FLETC.

“As part of my military training, I attended FLETC as a student in 2003. I enjoyed my training time but was eager to be in the field and not in a classroom in southern Geogia. At that time, I would not have expected to return to FLETC as an instructor,” Rick explained.

Rick’s military career took him all over the world. Rick noted, “I learned so much from my time in the military and my travels. I wanted that momentum to continue into my next career.”

While in Colorado with his spouse, who was also active military, Rick began desiring a new location that would allow him and his wife to both continue working in alignment with their current military ranks. One of Rick’s colleagues at FLETC, knowing his senior military rank would qualify him for a military detail at FLETC as an instructor, encouraged him to apply to a detail at the Glynco campus.  Rick applied and was detailed to the Physical Techniques Division (PTD). “Things just seemed to fall into place,” Rick stated.  “After I submitted my military retirement paperwork, a permanent FLETC instructor position became available, and I applied on USAjobs.gov. After being interviewed, I was offered the job and I accepted.”

“Being an instructor at FLETC mirrored what I loved about my military career: Lots to learn.” Rick has since applied to and been selected for other positions, he continued, “Even in my current role as a senior official with the business side of FLETC, my learning has continued to expand. It is rewarding to use the knowledge I gained as an instructor to enhance the business operations side of FLETC.”

I asked Rick to elaborate on FLETC’s career paths. He responded, “FLETC has many ways for people, no matter where they start, to move into different roles. I have heard people say, the best time to plant a tree is a 100 years ago. That perspective on life serves no one. The next best time to plant a tree is now.” Rick continued, “During my time as an instructor at FLETC I took every opportunity to learn about and contribute to FLETC’s business operations. When my current support function role was advertised, I immediately applied knowing that I could positively impact the organization from this role.” I would like to add that I met Rick, while he was an instructor, through a mutual colleague as he required my expertise on a PTD research project he was leading.

I asked Rick why he chose Glynco, Ga. Rick emphasized the slower pace of life and traditional southern hospitality. “Having come from Denver and traveled the globe, southern Georgia was an excellent next step in my and my family’s life. Warm weather all year, beaches, and, as I mentioned before, the slower pace, provided my family with desired new adventures and opportunities.”

To conclude our discussion, I asked Rick if he had any final thoughts. He reiterated that now is the best time for anyone considering a career at FLETC to apply.
