Description
The Critical Communications Skills in Officer/Citizen Encounters Instructor Training Program, (CCSITP) is an interactive Center Advanced program directed to train and teach Academy Instructors and Field Operations Instructors effective and critical communication skills during law enforcement/citizen encounters. These skills are science-based and field-proven. The skills are designed to defuse conflict through a greater understanding of diverse communities and different communication styles. The curriculum for these topics are supported by peer reviewed research and behavioral science. Topics including implicit bias; the Cylinder Model of communication; principles of Motivational Interviewing and the ORBIT Model, and Cialdini’s Principles of Persuasion are all based on settled behavioral science and peer-reviewed research. This program incorporates these communication principles in order to avoid, nuetralize and defuse conflicts in officer citizen encounters through lecture and lab exercises to practice the application of these skills.
The goal of CCSITP is to teach critical communication skills in officer citizen encounters geared toward conflict control based on scientific principles of human behavior. This program will consist of lecture, tabletop exercises, and laboratory exercises where students will practice these critical skills.
Prerequisites
For acceptance into this program, the applicant must meet the below standards:
1. Applicant must be a law enforcement officer/agent of a federal, state, local, tribal or international agency.
2. Law enforcement personnel with joint duties as academy Instructor, field or in-service Training Officer.
3. Detailed or former law enforcement officers presently functioning as law enforcement academy or field training instructors.
