About the Rural Policing Institute

The Rural Policing Institute (RPI) is a Congressionally-mandated initiative of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC).  Public Law 110-53 requires the RPI to evaluate the needs of law enforcement agencies and other emergency responders in rural areas; develop expert training programs based on identified needs; deliver training programs to rural law enforcement officers and other emergency response providers; and conduct outreach efforts to ensure rural agencies are aware of the training.

The FLETC began implementing the RPI during Fiscal Year 2009, and funding is expected to continue through Fiscal Year 2013. The RPI currently offers advanced and specialized training to state, local, campus, and tribal law enforcement officers, and other emergency response providers who work in rural areas.

Training

  • The RPI exports training to locations throughout the United States. Visit the export training programs page to select the training you would like to attend. RPI program titles begin with “RPI.”
  • Limited funding is available to pay for students’ attendance at advanced programs occurring at FLETC sites in Glynco, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Cheltenham, Maryland; and Artesia, New Mexico. Sworn law enforcement officers from state, local, campus and tribal agencies can get into these training programs on a space-available basis. Visit the FLETC Advanced Training Programs page to learn more about advanced training programs available at FLETC sites.
  • The RPI provides a limited number of free eLearning subscriptions, enabling eligible officers to take distance learning courses through a contractor’s learning management system. Visit the E-Learning page to receive additional information about this training opportunity.

Costs

  • All RPI training is tuition–free for qualified students.
  • The RPI pays lodging costs for qualified students attending export programs and onsite FLETC advanced programs.
  • There is no cost to the agency or student for eLearning subscriptions provided by the RPI.
  • The RPI does not fund travel expenses.

Eligibility

  • RPI training is open to state, local, campus and tribal law enforcement officers and other emergency response providers who meet one of the following criteria:
  • Work in an area that is not located in a metropolitan statistical area
  • Work in a metropolitan statistical area, but within a jurisdiction that serves fewer than 50,000 people
